A custom ombre wall vinyl was selected to add interest to long corridors in the spectacular ‘The Work Project Capitagreen’ in Singapore. The building was designed by 2013 Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate Mr Toyo Ito and now offers 20,000 square feet of brand-new, co-working spaces and serviced offices.

With interior design by HASSELL, wall covering developed by our in-house design team and managed by our Singaporean distributor, BODE, the project was completed in August 2020.

The Brief

HASSELL wanted a textured wall that had an almost natural terracotta look to it.

The wall covering was to run down 70 metre of long corridors and around a square passageway that surrounds a spectacular, large central area.

“We were looking for an ombre effect wallpaper in terracotta tones, to tie in with the natural materials used by architect Toyo Ito in the base building lobby,” explains Matthew Shang from HASSELL.

The ombre wall was inspired using a similar ombre at ‘La Casa Perfect’ in LA. The combination of Elvis and Priscilla’s Californian base plus the contemporary furniture pieces made it highly compelling.

“We felt the ombre would strengthen the lighting effects and create more interest in the long corridors,” says Matthew. “The Work Project uses a concept of branded facades within the corridor, which we reinforced with plywood arches to separate – the ombre walls opposite created a calm yet intriguing counterpoint.”

Materialised Ombre Wall

For the ombre wall, HASSELL chose two colours starting with a very dark terracotta-brick colour and running into a more subtle, dirty orange that faded out at the top.

“Originally we sent Materialised just an image of the ombre and they made a great sample,” says Jenny from Bode Fabrics. “We then chose more colours to see the outcome, however the original sent by Materialised proved to be the best.”

The design was printed on Main Sail to get the best texture.

The Result

“The effect was really nice, exactly what we were looking for. The custom design team did a great job selecting the colours and gradient for us (much better than we could have done!)” – Alan McCorkindale, Senior Interior Designer, HASSELL.
