The Brief.

To be bold and brave! A move from central Lower Hutt to custom designed offices on the Petone Foreshore offered IT company Radium the opportunity to support:

  • A wider cultural change.
  • Improved team experience.
  • A business development programme.

The Office Fit-out Challenges

Acoustically, creating a space that balanced the needs of the individual with that of the group was an important factor. Coders take a quiet work environment very seriously. Client-focussed roles have a different work rhythm. Yet all in the business need to share, update and collaborate.

How to balance these conflicting needs, as well as an unusually shaped octagonal floor plan, was an exciting challenge for Honour Creative. It required an in-depth understanding of acoustics, which has both technical and behavioural considerations.

“An important consideration for us is managing noise within an open workspace that combines IT Operations and Software Development” says Kate Hyndman, GM of Radium.

The Result

The kitchen and dining area formed the hub, the “inner heart” of the space and you’d be forgiven for thinking that this elegant, family-feel design was actually in someone’s home. Comfortable, tactile furnishings also offer practicality with our biro-proof, faux leather Lawson Ink and acoustic sheers maximising natural light whilst minimising sound.

“Materialised sheers in an office kitchen soften the beautiful natural light, obscure the not-that-beautiful view and offer a valuable third function. Hush Acoustic Sheers offer unobtrusive and highly effective sound absorption. Consideration of sound is a very important aspect of interior design, especially in open plan office environments. Dampening reverberation and reducing leak between rooms are two common requirements and these sheers help with the former,” says Interior Designer Frances Fraser of Honour Creative.

Frances undoubtedly nailed the brief for her client, thoroughly investigating acoustic requirements and delivering an aesthetically pleasing yet highly functional multi-use space.
