Completed in November 2020, this contemporary pub design by Enth Degree Architects brings a splash of colour to Newtown, Victoria. Previously ‘Lord of the Aisles’ the new St. Lords boasts new bars, beer garden, gaming lounge, colourful upholstered booths and seating, and vibrant walls.

Enth Degree Architects always considers the people who will be benefiting from the designed spaces. Their signature is the eye for detail across seamlessly integrated environments, and a rational approach to both form and function. “Versatile is part of our philosophy,” says Catalina Loaiza, Architect at Enth Degree. “We don’t follow a pattern in our project as every space is different, it has its own needs, and it always varies in terms of location, type of clientele, and budget. We can achieve great results in every project regardless of the design concept or style we are going with.”

Contemporary Pub Design

So how does Enth Degree approach the pub design? “Firstly we study the space, its respective customers and the client’s wishes. Then, we analyse how it can be improved to satisfy the customers as well as having a positive contribution to the development of the area. The design concept we proposed depends on the nature of the building and the history behind the venue.”

The Brief

The main objective was to refresh and modernise the hotel, but at the same time retain the classy atmosphere. There was also a need for a new internal layout to have better circulation and business logistics, as well as having more natural light coming into the space.

“We had to be cautious with the result we wanted to achieve,” explains Catalina, “as we did not want to create a completely different venue where existing loyal customers would feel out of place. The main idea was to transform the hotel into a more sophisticated venue without losing its classy atmosphere.”

The Result

St. Lords has been effectively transformed into a contemporary locale; the bistro, gaming and beer garden retained their classy atmosphere but updated with a modern twist. The signage which was also re-designed by Enth Degree to suit the renovation has attracted new patrons to the hotel.
