The Brief.

The brief for the Coppersmith Hotel was simple… Create a contemporary hotel and dining destination without destroying the historic charm of the landmark building in South Melbourne.

The Location

Housed in the old Cricket Club Hotel in South Melbourne, the landmark pub was first licensed in 1870. Fast forward almost 150 years and the hotel is now a boutique establishment with 15 guest rooms, a gastronomic bar and dining room and a rooftop retreat.

Materialised Products

Arched windows, original brick walls and timber battens speak of the original aesthetic, with modern updates through the use of natural products like wood, copper and leather.

Our wide width sheer Segre drapery at the windows add luxury without detracting from the heritage atmosphere.

The bedrooms are a particularly good example of this seamless blend of old meets new. Dark wood furniture, modern light fittings and linen-look drapes soften the original exposed brick walls and sash windows.

The Result

Throughout, the selection of artisan furniture and fittings reflects the design teams desire to support local design and craftsmanship.

The result is a modern, award-winning hotel and dining venue that offers present-day amenities while maintaining a strong connection to the history of South Melbourne.

“We’ve designed Coppersmith to make you feel like a local. From touchdown to turndown it’s luxury on a smaller scale.”The Coppersmith Hotel.
