Some of Brigitte’s metal inspiration for the new colour range for metallic wall covering

One such development has been made possible through our purchase of the state-of-the-art swissQ Karibu S wall covering printer and a silver vinyl substrate… Studio 54.

This shimmering, printable silver wall vinyl substrate offers interior design sophistication with a playful nod to when disco reigned supreme. It delivers incredibly intense colours, achieved through the high lustre base, with a subtle texture that makes any design sparkle.

We had a chat with our Lead Designer, Brigitte Marlot, who developed our range of metallic wall covering colours.

What sparked the idea of creating different  metallic wall covering shades?

“Since we started printing wall covering substrates there has been strong demand for metallics, specifically gold. It certainly adds a touch of serious glam to any interior design setting!

So, when we launched Studio 54, our silver printable vinyl, I knew it would be the perfect substrate to create beautiful, lustrous metallic shades that could find their way into many projects. I love how the lighter colours deliver a lot of sparkle, whilst the ones saturated in ink appear more subdued.”

How did you create the different metal colours?

“I looked at the most popular metals in interior design such as brass, gold and copper. Next I collected metallic objects to match back to. Since I worked on this project in the lead-up to Christmas, there was no shortage of gold inspiration!”

I have a gold bracelet my mother gave me; it’s a paler shade of gold and I love its subtlety and patina. It was the inspiration for Metal 5, so that one is my favourite. – Brigitte Marlot

Tell us a little bit about the swissQ printer

“The swissQ is an amazing ‘tool’ for the digital team. It allows us to flatbed samples, which is invaluable when you want to do many colour tests in quick succession.”

Which designs did you choose from our library, and why?

I used Florence Broadhurst’s bold graphic designs Turnabouts using Metals 1 and 21; and Swedish Stripe with Metals 10, 13, and 15. Both designs take very well to the brighter metallic shades. A throwback to the disco era!

Brigitte also chose Shibori’s Fold, a subtle design made with the creased lines of folded origami paper. It was customised with Metal 23 and printed on Studio 54. And what a stunning result!

Next, we tasked Materialised’s Klaryce and Rebecca with customising some of their favourite prints, and here is what they created…

Klaryce Edwards – Jimmy Pike

Klaryce tells us about how she customised Jimmy Pike’s design…

“Jimmy Pike drew inspiration from Australian landscapes to create stand out designs, breathing life into any commercial or residential space. Now we have a new and exciting way to use these!”

“A personal favourite from Jimmy Pike’s ‘Desert In Colour’ collection is Wildflowers. Customising this using our new Hello Metals colours and printing onto Studio 54 created a design which is very bold. It is ready to energise and elevate any interior! I used five of our new Hello Metals: 3, 5, 6, 16 and 17 and love how eye catching and playful this turned out!

With bright and warming shades of red, gold, and pink it created a contemporary design which would work well in a variety of projects. I’m excited for all the possibilities when designing with this latest colour chart and substrate! – Klaryce Edwards

Rebecca Rego – Patricia Braune

Rebecca adores Patricia Braune’s work, especially Kangaroo Paws. “I love working with bright colours, so was instantly drawn to the rose and yellow golds when customising this design,” says Rebecca. Featured metals are: 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 15, 22 and 23.

I love the softness of the Kangaroo Paws design, and Patricia’s use of negative space, creating a sense of tranquillity and serenity. It is so versatile that whether you prefer soft pastels or bold colours it can be customised to suit your space – Rebecca Rego
