Biophilic design, characterised by integrating natural elements and environments into man-made spaces, offers a multitude of benefits across various sectors including commercial, healthcare, and hospitality spaces.

Here’s some inspiration with a new Hot Off The Press print, called Greenhouse.

Greenhouse is a lush and vibrant digital print developed by our in-house designer Rebecca Rego, featuring a delightful array of leafy plants.

“During my brief time living in Cronulla, I often strolled through nearby nature reserves, capturing the lush foliage through photographs,” explains Bec. “Also, many of these plants are actual specimens living within our digital space at Materialised. These moments of inspiration found their way back to my studio, where I translated them into illustrations for this captivating print.”

6 Benefits of Biophilic Design

1. Stress Reduction and Wellbeing

Incorporating natural elements like plants, natural light, and views of greenery can significantly reduce stress levels and enhance overall wellbeing among occupants. This effect is particularly valuable in environments such as hospitals and commercial offices where stress is common.

2. Improved Air Quality

Utilising plants and natural ventilation systems can enhance indoor air quality by reducing pollutants and increasing oxygen levels. This is crucial in hospitals and hospitality settings where clean air is essential for patient recovery and guest comfort. Go one step further and print your chosen biophilic design onto a low VOC base substrate, such as Eden wall covering or any performance fabric with Greenguard certification, such as Cryptons.

3. Enhanced Productivity and Focus

Studies show that exposure to nature and natural elements can boost cognitive function, creativity, and productivity. In commercial spaces, incorporating biophilic elements like green walls or indoor gardens can lead to improved employee performance and satisfaction. This can be emulated through a print that adorns wall and furniture.

4. Healing and Recovery

Hospitals benefit from biophilic design by providing patients with nature scenes, access to outdoor spaces, and natural light, which can aid in the healing process and reduce recovery times.

5. Increased Guest Satisfaction

In the hospitality industry, biophilic designs create a welcoming and calming atmosphere for guests. Designs such as Greenhouse, plants, and nature-inspired artwork can enhance the overall guest experience and encourage repeat visits.

6. Sustainability and Eco-Friendly Practices

Biophilic designs often emphasise sustainable practices by utilising locally sourced materials, energy-efficient systems, and green technologies. This aligns with growing consumer preferences for environmentally responsible businesses, like ours. This can be further developed by selecting base substrates with sustainable attributes.

Adopting biophilic designs in commercial, healthcare, and hospitality spaces not only enriches the aesthetic appeal of these environments but also contributes to the wellbeing, productivity, and sustainability of the spaces and their occupants.

The incorporation of nature-inspired elements aligns with contemporary design trends and supports a healthier, more harmonious relationship between built environments and the natural world.
