CHADA design moodboard, Roslyn Earp

A botanical wall mural, illustrated by Roslyn Earp, was developed and printed for interior design specialist, CHADA. Here you’ll see it installed for the Gin Lounge at the Hospitality Design Fair, 2021.

With Limoncello and G&T’s supplied by gin gurus Earp Distilling Co, guests got into the spirit of things under the amazing Australian bushland backdrop. Rebecca Boland, Associate at CHADA, presented the wall covering at a Design Talk, demonstrating how customisation further strengthens the design concept and narrative.

How the botanical wall mural was developed

CHADA used a Roslyn Earp tile mural, from the Earp Distillery façade, as the starting point for the design. Being Mum to Earp Distilling Directors, Richard and Michael, fulfils the company’s vision of embedding family roots throughout the distillery. And so, how fitting to carry this through to the Gin Lounge!

A local artist, Roslyn once painted a full-size Gymea lily, 3.5m high, which is now owned by Newcastle Art Gallery. The tiled image on the distillery building was taken from a painting by Ros. “I only paint from real plants that I pick fresh. The trouble is that plants move. If they are taken inside, they will turn towards the light, flowers open, and then they die! So I have to work really quickly,” she explains.

“I only work in watercolour for wildlife studies, which I find are layered many times to achieve an intensity of colours. And I only use high quality English paper, as it will absorb the amount of water applied.”

The CHADA team worked with Roslyn to develop and adapt her painting to suit the exhibition space. “The panel I did for the wall covering was tricky”, says Ros. “It had to be able to join precisely with the next panel, so that it appeared to be continuous.”

The pattern repeat, colour and depth of the design are meticulously worked on by our design team to reach the sample review stage.

Once approved, the artwork was divided into 12 panel drops measuring 1283 x 3200 mm. These were then digitally printed onto Silk Road, a flame retardant Type II commercial wall vinyl.
