Wall covering colour trends vary depending on industry sector, but in 2022 we’re seeing a move away from white walls and a lean towards warmth.
Enth Degree Architects gave us some insight on the colour selection process for their hospitality and commercial design. Senior Architect, Esther Choi, explains “Colours play an integral part of our daily life. Coming into a room of a certain colour, brightness, shade, tint or tone in combination with lighting can affect the mood and energy levels of the person right away.
Colours strongly influence the shape and size of the room and furnishings. It can be used to make a small room feel more spacious or a large room more intimate by using the proper hues in the right way. All in all, colours can be used to add personality to a room. Besides furnishings and size, the space gains identity by using colours.”
Different industries demand different colour palettes
We asked Brigitte Marlot, our Lead Designer, and Rick Hickman, VP of Sales for Momentum Textiles & Wallcovering, about wall covering colour trends. Here is a summary of their insights across all industry sectors…
- A colour palette of sage greens and a newer, muddier ‘gumnut green’ version, are omnipresent
- Whilst whites and cool greys have been popular, palettes are warming up and beige is slowly replacing grey as the neutral of choice
- We see the return of browns and rich earthy tones
- Navy is popular in hospitality design and we are seeing a shift from other blues to a greenish/blue hue
- For corporate spaces, pops of colour and pattern are used in breakaway areas and meeting rooms
- In healthcare design, we see multicolour for clinical areas and tonal colours in assisted living – with less emboss for cleanability. Of note is that PVC-free wallcovering is often specified for this sector, in varying palettes.
- There’s less pattern used in educational spaces and more saturated and primary colours, utilising colour theory to promote the activity of the specific space. Acoustic wall covering is often requested for education industry design.
As the infamous Florence Broadhurst once said, ‘I tell my clients they must surround themselves with the colours that inspire or uplift them.”
