Where Nature Meets Elegance
The Bay Lines Collection by Patricia Braune was inspired by the serene beauty of East Australian coastal flora and textures. Drawing from the picturesque landscapes and soothing energy of Nelson Bay, each illustrative interpretation within the collection is a heartfelt homage to the calming allure of life in the Bay.
“From the mesmerising dance of the trees to the intricate details of the blooms, every element reflects our profound appreciation for the unique beauty, lushness, and textures the Bay offers,” explains Patricia.
“Looking up at the towering Gymea Lilies that punctuate morning walks, to the dappled shade offered by glossy Umbrella Tree leaves, each design grew from observation. The vegetation and textures that epitomise coastal living, invoke a tactile connection to the rhythms of the Bay.”
The Bay Lines Collection Designs
LOOKING UP
‘Looking Up’ was how I spotted the Gymea Lily with its hardy, reddish rosette of trumpet-shaped flowers at the top of the six-metre-tall flower spike. In creating this design, I focused on the rosette with its multi-layered bloom full of texture and movement.
MORNING SUNSHINE
This design is named after the Morning Sunshine variant of the Cordyline, also known as the ‘Good Luck Tree’. These plants are so versatile and can even be eaten. The carpet of leaves that flow from this design has a subtle movement of curls and a dense and lush texture.
PARASOL LEAVES
The glossy, palmately leaves that radiate from a central stem of the ‘Umbrella Plant’ inspired the Parasol Leaves design. These leaves gently fan out into a rounded crown and the fruit has brilliantly displayed berries clustered together.
PASSION FLORA
The impressive tropical Passion Fruit flower was the creative influence for the Passion Flora design. This intricate bloom growing along the vine was the motivation to create a classic tropical flower design growing and winding along a simple wall.
TANGLED
Observing the fishing nets at the Marina, you start noticing the interesting patterns they create. The hand-tied knots and tangled strands really sparked my imagination for the illustrations in this design.
WOVEN CANOPY
As you wander the Bay’s shoreline, the Butterfly Tree’s rounded leaves create a picturesque canopy, offering refreshing shade along with the delightful aroma of its purple blooms. It’s these unique leaves and the negative spaces they created that served as the inspiration for this design.
SEA GRASS RATTAN
By admiring the artistry of rattan weaving, one gains a profound appreciation for the diverse capabilities of woven grasses. Seagrass Rattan design demonstrates this intricate and captivating craft through my hand-illustrated interpretation of this weave.
Our textile designer, Rebecca Rego, worked with Patricia on developing the collection for the contract furnishings market. We asked Bec a few questions about this process…
What was your first reaction to the initial designs sent by Patricia?
“I loved the vibrant colours and fresh designs,” says Bec. “Patricia’s attention to detail in each piece was impressive. With so many options to choose from, browsing the initial print collection was exciting, and it was simply beautiful.”
What did you need to do to adapt the work for commercial interior use?
“We carefully selected two standout prints, Parasol Leaves and Looking Up, for their ability to work across furnishing textiles, wall covering, window film and roller blinds. Morning Sunshine and Passion Flora offer versatility and add sophistication to the mix. When paired with smaller, textured prints like Seagrass Rattan and Tangled, they effortlessly elevate the ambiance of any space.”
Inspired by Patricia’s bold colour choices in her original artworks, Bec delved into more unconventional colour combinations, organising them into three main groups:
- Terra Firma: Earthy tones with a twist, featuring terracotta, blush, coral, and hints of blue – a subtle nod to Pantone’s ‘Peach Fuzz’. These hues bring a sense of grounding and sophistication, with navy and electric cobalt blue adding depth and richness.
- Verdant Shores: Expanding on Patricia’s darker blue and teal palette, Rebecca introduced chartreuse and light blue tones, creating a palette that exudes tranquillity, making it a timeless choice for many spaces.
- In Shade: The moodiest and darkest palette, showcasing charcoal with pops of mustard, gold, and olive. This modern, metallic palette adds a touch of elegance and refinement to any space, particularly when printed onto Palermo fabric, where the gold tones truly stand out.
Which design / colourway is your favourite and on which base substrate?
“I love all of the designs so much, but if I had to choose, Parasol Leaves has an incredible balance to it – it looks amazing in every colourway. I also love Morning Sunshine. The amount of detail in that design blew me away! When Patricia shared the initial file, I was amazed by how many layers there were. Both designs look stunning on Palermo.”
